Health & Insurance

Travel insurance

Please, please get travel insurance before you go, and make sure it covers medical care and emergency evacuation.

See your GP

Visit your GP or a travel clinic about 6–8 weeks before you fly to check which vaccinations are recommended for Nepal.

Food & water

  • Don't drink the tap water. Stick to bottled or filtered water, and use it to brush your teeth too.

  • Busy restaurants and hot, freshly cooked food are your safest bets.

  • Pack some basic tummy medication, just in case.

Air quality

Kathmandu can get smoggy and dusty in winter. If you're sensitive to that (or have asthma), bring a few face masks.

Altitude

Kathmandu sits at around 1,400 m. Most people won't notice, but you might feel a bit puffed on the stairs for the first day or so.
